The Moon tonight

The lighting reproduces the phase computed for this instant (Meeus algorithms) and the apparent size follows the current distance. The surface is the LRO (NASA) mosaic, served from this site.

Method and sources

Every value on this page is computed on the server with Jean Meeus’ algorithms (Astronomical Algorithms, 2nd ed., 1998): geocentric position (chapter 47, 60 periodic terms from ELP-2000/82), illuminated fraction (ch. 48), phases (ch. 49) and apsides (ch. 50). The tables were taken from the free “astronomia” port (MIT) and checked against the book’s examples and USNO published times (automated tests).

Dynamical times are converted to UTC with the Espenak & Meeus ΔT polynomials.

Reading these data
These are calculations, not observations: accuracy about 10″ in longitude, 4 km in distance, one minute on phases. No effect of lunar phases on earthquakes is established by these data; see the “Tides and earthquakes” Correspondences page.
