The warming spiral

Each turn is a year, each point a month: the departure from the 1951–1980 mean (GISTEMP) moves away from the centre as the planet warms. The spiral draws itself from 1880.

Method and sources

GISTEMP v4 (NASA GISS) combines GHCN v4 stations with ERSSTv5 SST; anomalies are relative to 1951–1980. Ocean surface temperature comes from NOAAGlobalTemp (NCEI, Climate at a Glance), relative to 1901–2000. The base periods differ, so values are not directly comparable between series.

Yearly means are computed on the server from the available months; the current year is partial.

Reading these data
Global anomalies carry an uncertainty of about ±0.05 °C for recent decades and more before 1950 (Lenssen et al., 2024). The files are revised every month.
