Brest, two centuries of tides

The Brest tide gauge has measured sea level since 1807, one of the longest records in the world. Each ring is one year of PSMSL monthly means.

Method and sources

Global mean sea level comes from satellite altimetry (TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1/2/3, Sentinel-6MF) processed by the NOAA STAR altimetry laboratory, about one value every ten days. Tide gauges come from PSMSL (Revised Local Reference): monthly heights in mm relative to a fixed datum per station, about 7000 mm below mean level.

Tide-gauge levels include vertical land motion; they are not corrected here.

Reading these data
Altimetry and tide gauges do not measure the same thing: a geocentric level for the first, a level relative to the coast for the second. Local trends differ from the global mean (≈ 3 mm/yr since 1993).
