Solar wind Speed, density and Bz near Earth (OMNI2, hourly since 1963)

Sun–Earth · solar wind

The solar wind live

A continuous flow of particles leaves the Sun at a few hundred kilometres per second. Particle speed in this view follows the latest OMNI measurement; the magnetopause sits where the measured dynamic pressure puts it (Shue et al., 1998).

Method and sources

OMNI2 (NASA/GSFC) merges measurements from several spacecraft (IMP-8, Wind, ACE, DSCOVR…) propagated to the nose of the magnetosphere. Speed in km/s, proton density in cm⁻³, interplanetary field Bz component in GSM coordinates (nT). Hourly means are plotted as provided; the files’ fill values (999.9, 9999.) are discarded and gaps are not interpolated.

The yearly files of the last two years are re-read on each import; each run records the hash of the files read.

Reading these data
OMNI2 files are updated with a delay of weeks to months; the “latest hour” is not a real-time value. Before 1995 the coverage is sparse and the instruments differ.
