The tidal bulges
The Moon’s pull stretches the ocean into two bulges, one facing it, one opposite. The Sun strengthens the effect when aligned (spring tides) and weakens it at the quarters (neap tides). The animation runs one lunation from today’s position.

Bulges greatly exaggerated; solar to lunar tidal force ratio ≈ 0.46. Real tides also depend on the ocean basins.

Hourly heights come from the University of Hawaii Sea Level Center fast-delivery stream (station 057, Honolulu), in mm relative to the station datum; missing hours (−32767) are discarded and only years from 2015 are imported. Daily maxima and monthly means are computed on the server.
The astronomical tide is the ocean’s response to the tide-generating potential of the Moon and Sun; its constituents (M2, S2, K1, O1…) are not fitted here.
