The Sun today
The spots in this view follow the latest monthly sunspot number: the higher it is, the more groups appear in the two activity belts (5° to 35° latitude). Surface and corona are an illustration, not an image.
Illustrative rendering: number of groups ≈ sunspot number ÷ 14, positions drawn at random in the activity belts; procedural granulation and corona.

The sunspot number is the index R = k (10 g + f), where g is the number of groups, f the number of individual spots and k an observer-specific factor. Version 2.0 (July 2015) recalibrated the whole series; values are not comparable with version 1.0 without conversion.
SILSO files are read as published: -1 marks a missing observation, the error column is the standard deviation, and a marker separates definitive from provisional values. Licence CC BY-NC 4.0: non-commercial use, citation required.
