Méthode et sources
Étendue mensuelle de la couverture neigeuse calculée par le Rutgers Global Snow Lab à partir des cartes hebdomadaires de la NOAA (relevé climatique de la NOAA, Robinson et Estilow ; Estilow et al., 2015), depuis novembre 1966, sur une grille de 190 km. Valeurs converties en millions de km².
Les cartes reposent sur l’interprétation d’images satellitaires visibles, puis micro-ondes ; leur résolution s’est améliorée avec le temps, ce que la grille commune de 190 km atténue.

L’étendue ne dit rien de l’épaisseur ni de l’équivalent en eau de la neige, qui comptent pour les rivières. L’automne montre peu de tendance, voire une hausse, alors que le printemps recule nettement : la moyenne annuelle mélange ces deux saisons.
